Wanted Level (GTA V)
How police stars, dispatch units, and losing a wanted level work in Grand Theft Auto V story mode.
Overview
GTA V tracks heat with one to five wanted stars. Higher stars bring faster, heavier law-enforcement response across Los Santos and Blaine County. The pause map and HUD stars show the current level during freeroam and many story missions.
Response tiers
| Stars | Typical response | | --- | --- | | 1–2 | Local police cruisers and roadblocks building up | | 3 | Heavier pursuit, helicopters more common | | 4–5 | NOOSE-style tactical units and sustained air support | Exact unit mixes vary by area and whether the player is in a vehicle or on foot. Fort Zancudo and other restricted sites can spike response independently of street crime.
Losing wanted level
Leave the search area, break line of sight, use tunnels or off-road cover, or enter safe interiors when the game allows. Paying for a bribe or using mission scripts can also clear stars. The HUD search radius shrinks as police lose track.
Trivia
Story missions often script wanted gains and clears. See Wanted Level (GTA Online) for freeroam differences and Lester services.
