Strangers and Freaks

Optional character-driven side missions marked with question marks and letter icons on the GTA V map, required for 100% completion.

Overview

Strangers and Freaks are optional story-adjacent missions in GTA V. Each chain begins when a protagonist approaches a stranger marked on the map after the required story progress. Franklin, Michael, and Trevor each have exclusive strands, while some chains unlock only for one character. Completing every strand contributes toward the 100% completion total shown in the pause menu Game stats screen. Mission progress saves at most checkpoints in supported titles, and the pause-map legend continues to display active objectives while players manage wanted levels or switch protagonists when the strand allows.

Walkthrough

1. Progress the main story until stranger icons appear on the map. 2. Switch to the protagonist indicated by the mission letter color if needed. 3. Approach the marked stranger and accept the introductory cutscene. 4. Complete each mission in the chain before the next marker appears. 5. Track remaining strands in the pause menu under Game stats — Strangers and Freaks. 6. Review the mission summary on the results screen for payout totals, respect changes, or unlock notifications before returning to freeroam.

Completion Notes

Failure conditions vary per strand but generally include protagonist death, abandoning mission vehicles, or killing required NPCs. Some chains are missable if the player progresses too far in the main story before starting them, so completion guides recommend finishing stranger content before the final heist sequence.

Trivia

Strangers and Freaks include well-known chains such as Paparazzo, Epsilon Program, and Rampages. Letter colors on the map correspond to Franklin (green), Michael (blue), and Trevor (orange). Rockstar documents these beats in the retail mission text, phone scripts, and pause-menu checklist where applicable.
