Michael De Santa
Former bank robber Michael Townley faked his death, entered witness protection as Michael De Santa, and lives in Rockford Hills until Franklin Clinton and Trevor Philips pull him back into crime.
Overview
Michael De Santa is one of three playable protagonists in Grand Theft Auto V. He is a retired career criminal living under a new identity after a North Yankton score went wrong in the Prologue. Michael’s story arc tracks suburban dissatisfaction, family collapse, and the return of Trevor Philips, the partner who believed Michael died in that job. Most of Michael’s missions focus on Rockford Hills domestic drama, FIB coercion through agent Dave Norton, and Lester Crest’s heist planning board.
Story role
Michael meets Franklin during Complications when Franklin attempts to repossess Jimmy’s bicycle. Their partnership grows through yacht recovery, Madrazo debt, and the first major heists. Federal handler Steve Haines forces Michael into agency work including Dead Man Walking and Monkey Business. Michael’s relationship with Trevor defines the mid-game: Bury the Hatchet revisits North Yankton, and the finale choice determines whether Michael survives The Time’s Come or fights alongside the crew in The Third Way.
Gameplay
Michael’s special ability slows time while shooting, making him the strongest gunfight protagonist for precision combat. His safehouse garage stores personal vehicles, and his family home unlocks wardrobe and save functions. Story progress switches control between Michael, Franklin, and Trevor; Michael-specific strangers include Risk Assessment with Dom Beasley. Property purchases such as a private cinema appear on his character sheet after certain story beats.
Trivia
Michael’s house address and interior layout are used repeatedly in cutscenes and heist planning. The Prologue establishes his partnership with Trevor and the FIB deal that created his protected identity.
